I remember the first time I heard Kermie sing these infamous words: It's not that easy being green; Having to spend each day the color of the leaves. When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold- or something much more colorful like that. It's not easy being green. It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things. And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water- or stars in the sky. But green's the color of Spring. And green can be cool and friendly-like. And green can be big like the ocean, or important like a mountain, or tall like a tree. When green is all there is to be It could make you wonder why, but why wonder? Why Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful! And I think it's what I want to be. written by Joe Raposo and performed by Jim Henson... When people refer to performers as "being green" they are saying that they are new to the business, inexperienced. Just like Kermit being green (as in a green frog) turns out not to be a thing to be embarrassed about, neither is being green in the business of performing. Becoming familiar with the process of auditioning, being prepared with what is needed at the audition is just as important as being okay with not getting a specific role, solo, part or even getting cast at all. I always tell the people I am coaching that "they say" that you are not always auditioning for the role you think you are, but for the future. This is so very true. So hit your mark, slate your name, have a clean crisp resume, your best 16 bars or 90 seconds, have that audition wardrobe and give it your best. The more you practice, the more you will be comfortable auditioning and some of us even enjoy auditioning, and have learned to let go of the result and enjoy the process. I have had some of the best acting experiences at auditions for roles I did not get, but then got called back for roles I didn't think I was qualified or the right type for. Oh, BTW.... Kermit is one deep frog. He talks about being sad that he doesn't stand out and isn't all sparkly. Casting directors are not looking for the flashiest outfits, the loudest singers, the biggest hair do's even. They are looking for the best person (in their opinion) for the role that they are casting at that moment. The actors that are ready to go, respectful, prepared and can take directions are the actors that will get called upon again and then it's just a matter of time. You will get cast! It's so much fun and there is always a place for someone, somewhere. (oh no, another musical theatre reference, time to go!) Have an arts good day! It's beginning to feel like September. Before you know it, we will be able to get out our sweaters and sweatshirts, go to the apple orchards and pick apples and come home and make homemade apple pies, hot apple cider with a cinnamon stick, and drink hot chocolate while doing homework. My favorite time of the year. I
